Woodward, Ortiz

Two large scale portraits created with acrylic paint, matte medium, charcoal, sharpie and book paper. Each portrait reveals aspects of the subject through the content of the book pages utilized and the written text. These pieces invite viewers to search beyond the purely mimetic nature of portraiture.

Disconnected

Disconnected is a compulsive photographic series consisting of 30 4x4 digital black and white prints interspersed with a few colour, captured on an iPhone 4S utilizing Instagram for expedience and easy enhancement of images. The subjects of this series are people on the street who are so entranced by their electronic devices that they become oblivious to the environment around them. The nature of using an iPhone whilst compiling this series brings the photographer into a similar state as that of the subject, wherein the device used for capturing becomes the primary object of attention and awareness.

Zulu

Portrait of an Artist: Zulu Kendall.

Zulu is a portrait series consisting of five digital photographs captured on a Canon EOS Mark II. These portraits feature artist Max Kendall at work on a portrait of his father. Shutter speed was a priority concerning the production of the photographs due to Kendall’s animated style of working which I have attempted to capture within the portraits; the sheer number of photographs required to accomplish this directed me towards working digitally. Two hundred and fifty-six photographs were captured in the production of this series, of which I have selected five portraits which I feel best relate the vibrant, animated quality present within the subject.
